Sisters Of Invention – Sisterhood

The two sisters Malin and Karolina Almgren, with their unquestionable musical harmony, have managed to take the two genres and merged them to create a space where the listener oscillates back and forth – never in between, always in both. Their floating and relaxed sound, in constant full control, was rewarded in 2017 when they were crowned ”group of the year” in the Swedish National Radio Jazzkatten Awards. Individually, they have also set the gold standard for others, including with Henning and the Fanny Gunnarsson Quartet.

Since their debut album Navigating, the sister duo has increasingly developed a distinct sense of what Sisters of Invention is all about. Distinct and solid melodies over infectious rhythms have been a constant mantra, and on Sisterhood it’s distilled into a radiant brilliance. The opening track Heartache offers creative vocals, and shines with bouncing drum comps and caressing saxophone parts.

Although the material stands on its own two feet, the production value of Sign and Losing My Mind is worth its weight in gold – with both echoing wind chimes and subtle synth details, the wow factor is always close at hand. With the knowledge that the duo performs all the instruments on their own, it’s particularly striking how it all blends into a intricately woven whole.

On October 28, Sisterhood will be released to the public via the family record label Oh Yeah Records, first digitally and on CD, but also on vinyl in 2023. Sisters of Invention can also be experienced live, next at Malmö Live.
